Upgrade Guide to the PreViser Oral Health Information Suite™:
Upgrading from Version 2.1 to Version 3.0

Thank you for your interest in PreViser's Oral Health Information Suite™ (or OHIS, or simply PreViser™). If you have a previous version installed on your computer, this guide will walk you through the steps to upgrade your earlier version to Version 3.0. If you have never installed PreViser's software on your computer, simply refer to our Installation Guide for first-time users, as you do not have prior data you need to retain. Allow a few minutes for each computer to download and install this new version.

Important Notes:

  • If you have already installed an earlier version of PreViser's software on your computer(s), do NOT uninstall the previous version (v2.1) or you will lose your data. Your data is stored only on your local hard drive, not on PreViser's servers, so you need to protect it locally.
  • Please check that you have the PreViser™ software program closed while performing any installation or upgrade.
  • If you would prefer to receive the setup file on CD-ROM to avoid download time over a dial-up connection, please contact PreViser Support and we will send you a disk by mail.
  • If you are running the software over a network, you should perform the update on the server first, open the program on that computer to complete the database update, then follow the Networking Instructions for installing version 3.0 on your network to complete the setup and upgrade on the client computer(s).

WARNING: Your data stays on your local computer, not on PreViser's servers. If you uninstall the software or have a hard drive failure, you will lose your patient data, so always make a backup copy of your data file prior to upgrading or uninstalling, and on a regular basis to protect your data. In your old version 2.1, the data file is named prevdb.mdb and in the new version 3.0 the data file is named prevdb.db. Please contact a PreViser Support Representative if you have questions about how to do this, or see the Disaster Recovery Documentation in the Quick Start Guide or User's Guide.

Please refer to the final section here, for answers to Frequently Asked Questions about this process.

Part 2: DOWNLOADING INSTRUCTIONS

1. Go to www.previser.com and click the shortcut to "Install and Try PreViser Version 3.0" on the right side of the page.

2. You will reach the My Account area of the website.

3. You have three choices, based on whether you have a user account. Because you previously downloaded the software, you should already have a user account (username and password received from PreViser), so enter that information onto the account login field and click "Log in and Download" to verify your existing account information and proceed to download. If you forgot your username or password, enter the email address associated with that account and the system will immediately send your account information to that address. If you (or someone in your office) do not yet have an account, click "Create a free account" and you will fill out a form with information and choose a username and password for your account. We will send you your user information and instructions by email when you click "Create Account."

4. Review these installation instructions, then click Download for either Windows or Macintosh operating system. You will download the setup file which you will then run to install the program.

5.Choose to either OPEN or SAVE the file. We recommend you SAVE the setup file, then install it, to avoid any problems during this process. If you select Open, the installation process will begin automatically by downloading the setup file to a temporary folder. You should select Save, then the file will download to a location you choose (such as your Desktop), then you can install it from that folder when you choose.

6. Save the setup file in a temporary location where you can easily locate it, such as your Desktop, your "My Documents" folder (Windows) or your Home or Downloads folder (Mac).

7. Once the download is complete, you are ready to install the program, as described in the next section.

Part 3: INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. After you have downloaded the setup file (called previserv30setup.exe in Windows or PreViser3.0.mpkg on a Mac), go to the location where you saved the file.

2. Run the file by double-clicking on the icon or file name. The installation wizard will start; this may take a few seconds to open.

3. Follow the steps of the installation process as detailed here. Choose the appropriate options in the installer, clicking Next or Continue to proceed through each step of the Install wizard. The order of the screens varies slightly depending if you are a Windows or Mac user, but the basic components are:

Introduction Screen:
When you double-click on the file icon, the Installation Wizard should initiate the install and you'll see a welcome screen. Click Next or Continue.

End-user License Agreement:
You will be asked to read through the End-User License Agreement, and indicate whether you AGREE or DISAGREE with these terms of use. If you DISAGREE, the installation will terminate. You must accept the terms this license to continue the install.

Choose Destination Location:
Select a location for the application folder. The default option for Windows is on the "C" drive in the folder "Program Files," and for Mac it is your "Applications" folder.
If you want to change the installation location, click on the Browse button and choose the folder where you want the program installed.

Installation Type:
If you will use the software on multiple computers and want to share the data over your network, on this screen you will choose the type of installation you want on each computer. One computer will be the "server" which requires Full Installation. The others are "client" computers requiring only the limited "Client Tools Only" installation package. If you will use the software on only one computer, choose Full. Easy instructions on setting up the program on multiple computers are on the Networking page of the Support site here.

Start Installation:
Click Next on this screen will start the automatic process of installing the files correctly into the application folder, which displays in a progress window.

Installation Complete:
Once the installation is complete, the installer will display a verification screen. Choose Finish to exit the Wizard.

4. You are now ready to open the application for the first time.
For Windows users: There are two ways you can open the program at any time, depending on your preferences. One option (recommended) is to go to your computer Desktop and double-click on the shortcut icon (see below) to launch the application. The other option is to click the Start button (in the lower left corner of your screen), then go to Programs > PreViser v3.0 > PreViser v3.0. For Mac users: From the Finder sidebar click Applications, then double-click the PreViser™ application logo.

However you choose to open the application, look for the small PreViser™ logo shown here:

In order to have full access to the functionality of the application, you will need a username. If you did not uninstall your previous version of the OHIS™ (RiskCalculator™), you will still have all the information stored in your data file migrated into the new version, so your user information will be retained on the Options page.

Please begin by referring to the Quick Start Guide which you may access from the Options page in the software or on the Support site. This brief resource provides key instructions and information so you can begin using the program.

Part 4: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

Should I uninstall the older version before I install the new version?
--No. Uninstalling the v2.1 program means you will lose all your existing data stored there. You should simply install the new version 3.0, which will migrate your data into the new program data file. This allows you to keep all your existing patient information, reports, and your user information and settings.

How do I find what version of the software I have installed, so I know if I need to upgrade?
--Open the application and click on the "Help" in the upper left hand corner of the screen, then drop down on that menu to select "About PreViser RiskCalculator." The window that opens lists which version you are running; if it is older than the version posted on www.previser.com, you should install the new version. The version numbers increase with updated releases, so the greater the number, the more recent the version (i.e. version 2.1 is newer than 2.02). If it says version 2.1, you should upgrade to version 3.0.

Does this mean I will end up with two separate PreViser programs installed on my machine?
--Yes, if you are a PC user and were running version 2.1 previously. Installing this new version will create a new folder, so if you installed both versions to the default location, your Program Files folder will contain an old folder for v2.1 named PreviserRC and a new folder for v3.0 named PreViser v3.0. You will also have two shortcuts on your desktop, one labeled PreViser Risk Calculator that opens v2.1, and one named PreViser 3.0 that opens v3.0. To avoid confusion, we recommend that after verifying that you have v3.0 installed correctly and your data has migrated, you uninstall the old v2.1 so you do not use the wrong (old) application in the future (see next question).

If I have both versions installed and I use the old version by mistake, will that data be automatically transferred into the new version?
--No. The installation of version 3.0 includes a migration of the v2.1 database into the new version, but that is a one-time instance. To avoid confusion and accidentally using the old version (which will not be compatible with our servers in the future), we recommend that after verifying that you have v3.0 installed correctly and your data has migrated, you uninstall the old v2.1 so you do not use the wrong (old) application in the future.

Do I open the PreViser software program itself to do the upgrade?
--No. You should have thePreViser application closed on your computer when you install the updates. You should go online to PreViser's website, www.previser.com to download and install the new setup file to upgrade your current version of the software.

Do I need to learn a new way to use the new version of the software or re-train my staff?
--No. Most of what you see and do while using the software will remain the same as before. As always, if you have questions about a term, you may click on the "Help" button with a big blue question mark near the middle and top of the page while using the program, and a context-sensitive help definition from the User's Guide will pop up. If you would like more information or suggestions about using our software, please feel free to contact PreViser Support and we will be happy to offer additional training or advice. We recommend viewing the Quick Start Guide for the fastest overview of using the application.

Do I need a new Username?
--No, you should keep the username and password we sent you previously, which is retained in your datafile (as long as you do not uninstall the application). You can retrieve your username and password by email at any time from the My Account screen.

I have already configured the software to run on multiple computers on my network. Do I need to make changes to the server or client computers?
--Yes, you will need to make one configuration step during the installation process. However, the networking configuration for version 3.0 is much easier than for previous versions. You should begin by installing the new version on your server computer, and then follow the setup instructions for version 3.0 on the Networking Instructions posted on the Support site. You will need to install the upgraded version of the software on each computer and make one quick change in order to share one data file among all the computers, but make sure you follow the instructions to ensure you get it set up quickly and correctly..

What has changed with this new version of the Oral Health Information Suite™?
--Please see the Release Notes, posted on the PreViser Support site in the Documentation section, for a list of enhancements, changes, and fixes included in this release.

Do I have to pay for the upgrade?
--No, you may download the latest version for free from www.previser.com, and we encourage you to do so. If you have a slow Internet connection, please contact PreViser Support and we will mail you a disk with the setup files for free.

How do I make suggestions or change requests to improve or enhance PreViser?
--We welcome your feedback! Your input helps us know how to better meet your needs and enhance the tools and services we offer you. Please send your comments and ideas to our team at support@previser.com.
