Caries Risk Assessment: Age-Specific Sequence

At this point, the system has calculated the patient’s age (based on their date of birth as compared to the exam date), and the age determines the specific page that loads after the Exam Date screen. The next screen will either be Target Tooth or Patient Info, and the content on each of these screens will also vary depending on the patient's age:

If the patient is 18 years old or younger, you will see an additional screen to indicate a “Target Tooth,” used as part of the risk calculation for younger patients. The Target Tooth screen displays three types of teeth which are generally appropriate for that age grouping; this is explained more in the next few pages. After you select a Target Tooth, the appropriate Patient Info screen follows.

If a patient is 19 or older, the age-appropriate Patient Info screen will load immediately after the Exam Date screen.

Note: Does this sound confusing or complicated? Don't worry! The system performs this selection process automatically as you enter data, simplifying your experience as a user. However, for your reference, this documentation will review the contents and functional logic of all variations of the Target Tooth screen and Patient Info screen, as detailed below and in the following pages here in the User's Guide.

The patient age groupings, and the resulting relevant screen which will load after the Exam Date screen, are as follows:

  • Patient Age less than 1: You will see a warning that a patient must be at least one year old to have a Risk Assessment performed accurately.
  • Patient Age 1 to 4: Target Tooth C screen
  • Patient Age 5 to 8: Target Tooth B screen
  • Patient Age 9 to 18: Target Tooth A screen
  • Patient Age 19 to 33: Patient Info F screen
  • Patient Age 34 and older: Patient Info G screen

Again, you don't have to memorize any of this information or page terminology. The functional logic of the application determines it all for you, but so you can understand the flow of data entry, the following pages detail the contents of the various screens you may encounter.

If a Patient is over age 89:

Remember that to remain compliant with HIPAA privacy standards, Risk Assessments cannot be performed on patients over the age of 89. You can enter all the data, but upon clicking Finish at the end, a message will inform you that the patient age must be between 1 and 89 years. At that point, you can return to the Exam Date and change the year so that the system calculates the patient's age as falling within those parameters. (In other words, change the patient's apparent age to 89, to force the information to transmit. This will not affect the risk score.) See the HIPAA Compliance and Medical Privacy topic for more information about this requirement.

Next, we will look at the Target Tooth A screen.
